AN INTRODUCTION TO KODO KYODAN BUDDHISM

Shodo Okano

Translated by Taitetsu Unno

POSTSCRIPT

The Buddhist movement of Kodo Kyodan, which stresses the practice of filial piety the most concrete expression of compassion to all beings, has recently attracted much attention from peoples all over the world. The number of foreign friends of Kodo Kyodan is gradually increasing throughout the world, especially, Southeast Asia and America; and many students of comparative religion from abroad also frequently visit the Kodo Kyodan head quarters in Yokohama.

In order to meet the interests of our friends who do not have access to the Japanese literature on Kodo Kyodan, we have published several pamphlets English in the past and currently we issue the bi-monthly English journal, Kodo News, We now bring you An Introduction to Kodo Kyodan Buddhism, which is the English translation of the Juku-eki Shobo Gairon by the Archbishop Shodo Okano. A Chinese translation of this work has already been published.

This work consists primarily of short radio talks given by Archbishop Okano, and therefore it is written in a concise and understandable style. The English translation was undertaken by Taitetsu Unno of the Tokyo University Graduate School, who was recommended as a qualified translator by Dr. Shoson Miyamoto, Professor Emeritus of Tokyo University. We express our appreciation to him for the excellent translation he has produced.

In recent years Archbishop and Lady Okano have generously donated many books to Sweden and Denmark through the Chugai Nippo Newspaper program of contributing Buddhist literature to Northern European countries, and they have also subsidized a library (Chugoku Bunka Gakuin) in Taiwan. We are confident that the publication of this work will also play an important role in the propagation of Buddhism throughout the world.
