RELIGIONS IN JAPAN

Buddhism, Shinto, Christianity

WILLIAM K. BUNCE

Publication of this book will meet a long-left need for an up-to-date, reliable account of a subject of perennial interest. Students of Japanese culture will find here, in readable, non-technical language, answers to their many questions on the complicated and sometimes confusing scene of Japanese religions. Even the scholar may find in these pages new items to arrest his attention or new points of view which may stimulate a re-examination of hitherto accepted interpretations. For the general reader, there exists no better introduction to the vast subject of Japanese religions.

Religions in Japan were a report prepared in 1948 by Civilian Information and Education Section, General Headquarters, Supreme Commander for the allied Powers. It was originally conceived by officers of the Religions Division as a means of conceived by officers of the Religions Division as a means of enabling Military Government Teams better to understand problems encountered in the field of religion – as a handbook which would give historical perspective and provide concise and reliable information and an understanding of the significance of Occupation Policy as it related to religion.

Perhaps the greatest danger to religious freedom lies in the desire of many leaders of the established religions for more control of the so-called “new religions”. It is impossible to predict to what extent they will go in urging this control, but it hard to escape the feeling that much of the agitation is an expression of the urge for self-preservation, rather than genuine moral indignation over alleged violations of laws or accepted customs. How easy it for some to forget the time when their own faith was suspect because it was new!
