PUBLISHER’S FOREWORD

The Original MS of this work, as received from China, contained a number of diacritical marks over and under the Sanskrit terms used. It was, however, found impracticable to print these additions to normal English fount without increasing the cost of the published work, and its appearance would have been considerable delayed had we returned the MS to China for some alternative rendering of the terms into English lettering. We have therefore regretfully abandoned the marks as indicated, and printed the worlds without them. The result may horrify scholar, but it is in our view more important at the present time to make known the principles of Buddhism-the religion –philosophy with the most peaceful record of any known-than to stand upon the niceties of scholarship. We apologise to the Author for thus treating amous names and terms, and to the public for any confusion resulting thereform.
