PREFACE

I wish here to express grateful acknowledgement to those whose co-operation has made this volume possible and who have helped to give it whatever virtues it possesses.

Several scholars who are more familiar with Buddhist literature than I have given me kindly counsel regarding the choice of selections and have kept me from making several mistakes that I might easily have fallen into without their help. Doubtless there are other mistakes which I have not avoided; these friends are not responsible for them. I wish especially to thank in this connection, Professor Kenneth Chen of Harvard University, Professor Kenneth W. Morgan of Colgate University, Professor Clarence H. Hamilton of Oberlin College, Dr. Cecil W. Hobbs of the Reference Department of the Library of Congress, the Bhikkhu Sangarakstra of the Maha Bodhi Society in Calcutta, and Professors Walter Liebenthal and K. Venkataramanan of the Visva-Bharati University at Santiniketan, India.

Professor Hamilton and Professor Liebenthal have also given kind permission to use translations of their own which it would not have been possible otherwise to include in this volume (Part V, Selection 2; and Part VI, Selection 6 and 8).
