In the Pali scriptures we have the earliest documents of Buddhism , and they have the value not only of giving a picture of an early phase of Indian religious thought, but also one which is alive in the East at the present day. Its principles still make both an appeal and a challenge to modern religious movement in the West. The present selection is intended  to present the chief doctrines of the Founder as well as the traditions of his life and something of his lofty ethical teaching.
