FOREWORD

IN THE YEARS since its imitation the Shin Buddhism Translation series has received a number of favorable comments from Shin followers and scholars of religion throughout the world. For the many Shin Buddhists both in Japan and abroad, the works bring into relief the inspiring message of Shinran Shõnin, upon which the teaching of Shin Buddhism is based . For scholars of religion, the Series opens up a store of information regarding one of the great religious traditions of the East, Mahayana Buddhism.

The Series was intiated in 1978 in commemoration of the accession of his eminence the Monshu Kõshin Õtani of the Jõdo Shinshũ Hongwanji-ha on April, 1977. The object of the Series is to present the complete writings of Shinran Shõnin, the founder of the Shin sect, in lucid translation with clear, accurate introductions and glossaries. The initial work in the Series was the publication of the Letters of Shinran: Mattõshõ in 1978, followed by Notes on ‘Essentials of Faith Alone’: Yuishinshõ mon’I (1979), Notes on Once-calling and Many-calling: Yushinshõ tanen mon’I (1980) and Notes on the Inscriptions on Sacred Scrollss: Songõ shinzõ meimon (1981).

We believe that the Series, although in its incipient stages, will make a lasting contribution to furthering religious understanding in the years to come
